Stealing Thunder

For those of you who are wondering why it says “Stealing Thunder” (old site) at the top of the page I might be able to help you understand. This story time is brought to you by JasonAndrewsMusic.com

Before I had moved up to Lakeland to begin my training in classical music, I lived in the Florida Keys with my dad working on my first two years of college. I had a great band named Spacesuit Goddess, compliments of our bassist John. It consisted of me on lead guitar and vocals, John Schinelle on bass and vocals and Alex Caldwell on drums. Both John and I wrote songs constantly and we were always tried to out do the other. The titles we created for our songs were simply brilliant. Such as the songs “Magic Tuba”, “Call It What You Will” and “Milkbone”. Each, I assure you, had a completely legitimate reason for its name. Well, maybe not…

At the time we had been practicing in the backroom of my dad’s house and we were trying to come up with a name for John’s new song. After playing it many times and about an hour later we were still at a loss. Naturally, like all creative people, we started looking around the room for some inspiration. Then the magic happened! We locked on a box of dog treats called “Milkbone”. So that was that. The song was forever then “Milkbone” and there was nothing John could do to change it.

After several practices Alex had developed a unique and interesting rhythm during the verse. This had caught my fancy and by no means could I let him have all the glory! I started playing around with my guitar for a bit trying to get something to fit with Alex’s part. Eventually I found something that worked and started playing it during the next rehearsal. After several times of rehearsing it with my new part, Alex finally stopped in the middle of the song and yelled, “Quit stealing my thunder!” I did; but the sad part is actually really, really liked his thunder.

I first began using “Stealing Thunder” when I had created a MySpace for my classical music. Ever since then it has stuck and I carried the name to this site.
